Should warehouse cages be rented or bought? This is a question many companies wrestle with when running temporary projects or expanding in peak season. Both approaches have their scenarios; do the math before deciding, and do not choose on gut feeling. The general rule is: buy for long-term stable use, rent for short-term projects.

First calculate the purchase cost. A standard mid-size warehouse cage costs roughly 300–500 yuan; depreciated over eight years, the annual cost per cage is about 40–50 yuan. Add hidden costs for maintenance, repair, and storage management, and the comprehensive annual cost per cage is roughly 60–80 yuan. The advantage of buying is that the asset is yours, available anytime, with no need to return cages.

Then calculate the rental cost. Warehouse cage rental is generally charged monthly, at 15–30 yuan per cage per month, depending on lease length and quantity. Renting for a year costs 180–360 yuan per cage—more expensive than buying outright; but if you only rent for three months, the cost is 45–90 yuan per cage, cheaper than buying a 300-yuan cage. Rental also carries extras like deposit, transport, and return inspection, which must be added in.

How do you decide? If the usage cycle exceeds six months, buying outright is more cost-effective; for short projects of three months or less, renting is more suitable. For temporary peak-season expansion, you can rent in peak season and return in off-season, without keeping a fleet of cages year-round. Another consideration is capital occupation: buying is a one-off expenditure, renting spreads cost by month—renting is more flexible when cash flow is tight.

Caveats: rent under a contract that clearly sets compensation standards for cage damage, rules for loss, and the acceptance criteria at return. Nanjing Tongnuo Warehouse Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. both sells cages and supports short-term rental; based on your project cycle we can provide a cost calculation showing whether buying or renting is cheaper, and help you do the math clearly.
