Automated storage and shuttle racking demand more of a container than manual warehousing does. A standard cage is not automatically suitable: check dimensional consistency, base structure and stacking stability first.

Dimensional consistency is the precondition. Stacker cranes and shuttles locate by the millimetre, so outer dimensions must be controlled and same-batch cages interchangeable, otherwise picking jams or skews.

The base determines how the machine handles the cage. A flat or reinforced base suits equipment better; the base frame must be flat and free of warping, and forklift pockets must match the fork dimensions if the machine uses forks.

Stacking stability depends on post strength and socket design: the bottom cage carries the whole stack, so the load rating must be checked against total stacked weight. Cold or clean-room stores may also need a different finish.
